Pérez Art Museum Miami Introduces “Reading Art”

Pérez Art Museum Miami Introduces “Reading Art” With Book Discussion Group On “The Ongoing Moment” and Author Talk by Geoff Dyer.

Pérez Art Museum Miami is kicking off its new Reading Art book discussion group and author talk series with “The Ongoing Moment” by Geoff Dyer.  Reading Art brings authors to Miami to speak about their books and ideas that are relevant to PAMM’s exhibitions and collections, as well as contemporary visual culture.  Prior to the author’s visit, readers will be invited to join a discussion group about the book, led by invited guests, at the museum.  Each season, PAMM and the Miami Rail will introduce a selected book, inviting readers to pre-register for a discussion about the book.  Reading Art is a collaboration between PAMM and the Miami Rail. For more information about Reading Art or to register for the discussion, visit bit.ly/pammreadingart.

In consideration of the way images are indexed in the current exhibition, Image Search: Photography from the Collection, PAMM and the Miami Rail select “The Ongoing Moment” by Geoff Dyer.  Focusing on the ways in which canonical figures like Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Andre Kertesz, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus and William Eggleston have photographed the same things – barbershops, benches, hands, roads, signs – Geoff Dyer seeks to identify their signature styles. In doing so, he constructs a narrative in which these photographers – many of whom never met – constantly encounter one another.

“Truly original… A whole narrative of intensely felt and observed moments… After reading it, life seems larger.” John Berger, Harper’s Magazine

Reading Art Author Talk
Geoff Dyer: “Some Ongoing Thoughts on Some Ongoing Moments”
Thursday, March 6, 7pm
Free (PAMM is free to the public every first Thursday of the month with support provided by Knight Foundation)
Space is limited. First come, first seated.

Geoff Dyer will outline ideas behind and inspiration for “The Ongoing Moment,” particularly his idiosyncratic categories for organizing photographic images. Tracing some examples of particular tropes, hats for example, Dyer will ask what larger lessons can be learned from indexing photographs in a way that veers from traditional art historical chronologies and taxonomies. What is the further potential   of this method? Does it reveal something about the way photographers work, about a collective optical unconscious?

“The Ongoing Moment is a masterful meditation on photographs, but what makes it particularly valuable is the way it shows how Dyer has mastered the art of the essay, understood as a piece of discursive, personal writing, in which great, often melancholy themes are raised with lightness and very dry humour.” Alain de Botton, Books of the Year, Observer
