Art Talk: rete fó: too fly 4 the swatter: o la síntesis de Jean-Michel Basquiat

In conjunction with the opening of Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks, artist William Cordova will discuss the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat in relation to Haitian Vodou flags, Puerto Rican political posters, and Nicolás Guillén Landrián’s cut-up celluloid cinema. The talk will be followed by a discussion with PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans and PAMM Assistant Curator María Elena Ortiz. 

William Cordova is an interdisciplinary cultural practitioner born in Lima, Peru. His work addresses the metaphysics of space and time and how objects and perception change when we move around in space. He received a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996 and an MFA from Yale University in 2004. Cordova lives and works in Lima/Miami/New York City.

Cordova’s residencies include The Studio Museum in Harlem, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston’s CORE/MFAH program, American Academy in Berlin. Awards include Guna S. Mudheim Visual Arts Fellowship (2013), Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant (2011), Art Matters Grant (2009), Rema Hort Mann Foundation (2005), South Florida Cultural Consortium (2001). Exhibitions include Venice Biennial (2003), Whitney Biennial (2008), Greater New York (2010), Havana Biennial (2015), Site Santa Biennial (2016).

Organization and Support
Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks is organized by the Brooklyn Museum and is curated by Dieter Buchhart, guest curator, with Tricia Laughlin Bloom, former Associate Curator of Exhibitions, Brooklyn Museum. The presentation of this exhibition at Pérez Art Museum Miami has been organized by Assistant Curator María Elena Ortiz. It has been made possible by the Italian Trade Agency and Salone del Mobile.
