Jedd Novatt: Monotypes and More

Jedd  Novatt  is an artist who has created and continues to define a language of art making informed equally by histories of sculpture and the dynamism of the contemporary moment.

He is known for welded sculptures of seemingly incongruous cubes teetering on top of each other. Comprised of cubes with exposed voids  Novatt’s  sculptures are as much about line and drawing in space as they are about occupying space with mass.  Known for working in monumental scale, often outdoors, his works are also defined by their placement in the landscape and hence connection to the public. PAMM is home to two of these sculptures, Chaos Bizkaia (2012) and Chaos SAS (2013).

Jedd  Novatt: Monotypes and More, on the other hand, is comprised of small-scale sculptures that inform  Novatt’s  two-dimensional works on paper and his relationship to drawing. Displayed within a gallery with a window that looks down upon Chaos SAS, this is an unparalleled opportunity to capture the breadth of  Novatt’s  work in two and three dimensions, creating conversations  between objects in and outside the museum.

Jedd Novat (b. 1958, Brooklyn, New York) lives in Paris, France and divides time among studios in Paris, the Luberon in the Provence region of France, and the Basque region of Spain.  Novatt graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, New York, in 1980 and then pursued studying sculpture  at the Lacoste school of the Arts in southern France.  Since Novatt’s first solo exhibition in New York City in 1993, his work has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.  Novatt’s monumental sculptures were featured in Sotheby’s prestigious Beyond Limits exhibition at Chatsworth House in the UK in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2016. In 2019, three solo exhibitions of Novatt’s work were held in London at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), Smithson Plaza in Mayfair, and Waddington Custot gallery with large-scale sculpture and monotypes.  Recent permanent public installations of Novatt’s monumental Chaos series have been placed in Rolle Switzerland on Lake Geneva (Chaos DCC, 2018) and three monumental works on the main quad of Siena Heights University in Michigan (Chaos Trinitas, 2020) Novatt’s work is held in major public collections internationally, including: Chatsworth House Trust, Derbyshire, UK; City of Bilbao, Campa de los Ingleses (Bilbao Arts District), Spain; La Piscine, Musée d’Art et d’Industrie André Dilgent, Roubaix, France; Parco de’ Medici, Rome, Italy; City of Yountville, Napa Valley, CA; Pérez Art Museum Miami; Middlebury College Museum of Art, Middlebury, VT; SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah GA; The Art Museum, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ; Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, FL; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH; and Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH.
