About Arthur Baker
Arthur Baker, born in Boston, launched his career as a disco DJ and quickly transitioned into the studio, producing early disco hits like Northend’s “Kind of Life” and TJM’s “I Don’t Need No Music.” He became a pioneering figure in early hip-hop and house music, known for his innovative use of tape edits, sampling, and synthetic beats. Baker’s iconic productions include “Planet Rock,” New Order’s “Confusion,” Rockers Revenge’s “Walking on Sunshine,” and his own breakdance classic “Breakers Revenge” from the film “Beat Street.” He has worked with a range of legendary artists, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, and Cyndi Lauper. In 1985, he co-produced the anti-apartheid anthem “Sun City” with Little Steven Van Zandt, earning recognition from the United Nations for his contribution to the fight against apartheid.
Baker has also contributed to film soundtracks like “Beat Street,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and “Pretty in Pink,” and produced music documentaries such as “Finding the Funk” and “808: The Movie.” Now living in Miami, he hosts a weekly radio show, “Bakers Revenge,” on SiriusXM Studio 54 Radio and holds a monthly residency at Dante’s HiFi. His memoir, “Looking for the Perfect Beat,” is set for release in May 2025, along with new music in collaboration with José Parlá and Iván Moreno. Baker is also working with co-producers Nas and Michael Holman to develop “Beat Street” as a Broadway musical.
