Visual Description
White Arno & blue tower is a sculpture by conceptual artist Jenny Holzer made in 1996-98. The sculpture is a long, narrow two-sided electronic L.E.D. free standing column that measures 8 feet high by 5.2 inches wide and 3 inches deep. It is in portrait orientation, meaning its longest dimension runs perpendicular to the floor. The L.E.D. column is black and framed on the left and right by two silver metal strips, secured with metal screws about every 5 inches. Within the center black strip, there are letters made of individual white light emitting diodes, creating a pixelated effect. The sentence “I COVER YOU” is written in white sans-serif lettering in all capital letters. The words read from top to bottom, with each letter parallel with the floor. The tower is grounded in the center of a small, dark wooden base. Jenny Holzer uses text-based artwork, or word art, to explore themes of feminism and sexism. Most of her work confronts its viewers in public spaces.
