Since 2010, Andrea Bowers has expanded her practice to include light works that employ political slogans. The beguiling works tersely render the pronouncements, directly engaging the public in her forthright personal politics. In Climate Change is Real (Miami) Bowers incorporates the titular slogan in a metal sculpture with flashing neon lights. The issue of climate change is inseparable from politics in the U.S. and has catapulted to the forefront of national environmental concerns in recent years. It is particularly topical in Miami as the city faces rising sea levels.

Climate Change is Real by Andrea Bowers is a sculptural installation from 2017. It is made of neon lights with aluminum and paint. Its dimensions are variable.
The piece is comprised of four neon lights placed together on the wall. Together they read ‘Climate CHANGE IS Real’
Each piece is a different color and together they resemble signage used in storefronts and restaurants. The word ‘Climate’ is in a cursive-like script and blue in color. ‘CHANGE’ and ‘IS’ are in all capitals and in a non-serif typeface. ‘CHANGE’ is bright green while ‘IS’ features deep red. The final neon light, ‘Real’, is in the same cursive script as ‘Climate,‘ but is pink in color.
