Woody De Othello: coming forth by day

Introduction

Woody De Othello: coming forth by day is the first solo museum exhibition by Woody De Othello in his hometown of Miami. The exhibition features new sculptures and tiled wall works.

A major influence in his art is his Haitian heritage. De Othello often refers to the African concept of nkisi, an object believed to hold a spirit or inner power. This idea links his sculptures to spiritual traditions brought from Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas. By connecting these beliefs to his own work, he suggests that material objects can carry memory, history, and energy.

The process of making these objects involves the artist building the clay forms by hand, letting them sag, giving the impression that they are struggling or tired.

The objects are often inspired by everyday objects in our lives like clocks, mirrors, telephones etc. As they lose their traditional structure, the objects begin to reflect the body language of their users.
