About NEWBIES

Two broken strangers wrestling with their queer identities meet on the subway just after midnight. A poignant, poetic journey through the past few hours of their night reveals how they got here, and what broke them. NEWBIES stars Mia Isaac (Black Cake), Josiah Cross (A Thousand and One), and Danny Glover. The film premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, where it received the Texas Short Competition Special Jury Award.

About FLYPAPER

Kimiko Matsuda-Lawrence and Megan Trufant Tillman are a filmmaking duo hailing from Honolulu and New Orleans known as FLYPAPER. Their distinctive voice draws on their backgrounds in music and theater to compose tender cinematic portraits that explore the vast inner worlds of subjects who are rarely seen on screen. Their films are distinguished by lyrical visual language, intimate character portraiture, lush cinematography, and original scores composed by Tillman—who is also half of jazz/hip-hop outfit Magna Carda. Their duo directorial debut, NEWBIES, premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, where it received the Texas Short Competition Special Jury Award. The duo also recently debuted PERMANENT (2025), a short documentary film on the visionary American painter Noah Davis, as part of the traveling exhibition NOAH DAVIS at the Barbican Centre in London, the Hammer Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. They are currently in post-production on their next short film, THE BIRTHDAY SONG, an intimate rendering of a Black girl’s 13th birthday on the eve of Hurricane Katrina, which was selected as a winner of Tribeca Studios’ 2025 Kickstart with Canva Award.

About Executive Producer Mischaël Cetoute

Mischaël Cetoute is a Miami native, educator, attorney, and award-winning film producer best known for his collaboration with the visionary filmmaking duo FLYPAPER. He started his career as a history teacher at a Brooklyn high school, where, as the advisor to the school’s Hip Hop club, Cetoute realized the importance of champions to support artists as they strive to do their work—and he carries that ethos forth in his work as a producer. He is an Executive Producer of FLYPAPER’s short film NEWBIES, which premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, where it received the Texas Short Competition Special Jury Award. Next up, he serves as Producer on FLYPAPER’s forthcoming short film THE BIRTHDAY SONG, an intimate rendering of a Black girl’s 13th birthday on the eve of Hurricane Katrina, which was selected as a winner of Tribeca Studios’ 2025 Kickstart with Canva Award. In addition to his work as a producer, Cetoute works at the intersection of public policy and the narratives around historically disinvested neighborhoods. He currently serves on the NextGen Committee at PAMM.
