Calendar: After the Fracture

Event Description

After the Fracture, a collaborative performance created by interdisciplinary artists Marvin Fabien and Nyugen Smith, is a para-fictional epic. It imagines, in future, a fracture between continental plates as continents drift and The Fracture causes the Caribbean plate to rise and float away as the others surf toward each other. Island nations from the Caribbean archipelago, once divided by water, are now together on what is called The Island, and separated only by time. The historical timeline on The Island is referenced as Pre/Post-Fracture. In its new location, The Island has escaped climate catastrophe. New folklore, language, festivals, musical forms, and systems of governing predicated on preservation of life and care for the environment emerge. 

After the Fracture is the duo's fourth meditation on climate change affecting the Caribbean, coastal cities in the United States, and fragile sites populated by black and brown people across the globe. It is a continuous three-act work, scored my Fabien's dynamic soundscapes in proximity of a Bundlehouse. Bundlehouse, a term coined by Smith, refers to his on-going work based on shelters constructed from detritus by those forced to flee their home/land. Bundlehouse is also a metaphor for rebuilding one's life from what remains. The Bundlehouse installation process will be open to the public beginning Monday, December 2.

This performance is in conversation with and a continuation of Nyugen Smith's work within The Other Side of Now: Foresight in Contemporary Caribbean Art. Following the performance, Smith and Fabien will discuss the performance as it is situated within the future of Contemporary Caribbean Art with exhibition co-curators María Elena Ortiz and Marsha Pearce.

Nyugen Smith (USA, Haiti, Trinidad, and Tobago) is a first-generation Caribbean-American interdisciplinary artist based in Jersey City, NJ and Dallas, TX, where he is a Lecturer of Interdisciplinary Art in the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. Through performance, found object sculpture, mixed media drawing, painting, video, photo and writing, Smith deepens his knowledge of historical and present-day conditions of Black African descendants in the diaspora. Trauma, spiritual practices, language, violence, memory, architecture, landscape and climate change are primary concerns in his practice. He holds a BA, Fine Art from Seton Hall University and an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Smith is the recipient of the Leonore Annenberg Performing and Visual Arts Fund, Franklin Furnace Fund, and Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant.

Marvin Fabien (Dominica/Martinique) is an interdisciplinary artist from Dominica living in Martinique, French West Indies. He is a PhD candidate preparing a thesis on the development of new media art in the Caribbean. Composer, musician, he is also a lecturer in Art and Digital Humanities at the French University, Université des Antilles, Martinique. 

Fabien's work questions the idea of resistance through the aesthetics and the archetypes of popular music culture in the Caribbean. He has been developing through this research, digital performances, video mapping installations, sound art performances, soundscapes and mixed media artwork. In his performative work he develops a hybrid or Meta Caribbean music based on fusion of Dancehall, Reggaeton Bouyon, Soca, and other popular Caribbean genres mixed with western music such as Techno and Electro music. He has performed at various art events and festivals in Miami, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Barbados, and Martinique to name a few.
