Leandro Katz’s diverse work—which encompasses experimental films, sculptural installations, conceptual photography, and artist books—is unified by the idea of language as a point of intersection between social and cognitive operations. To create Word Column IV: Puno/Altamira, Katz attached a very long scroll of paper to a Royal model typewriter and proceeded to type words at random, resulting in a textual and sculptural representation of his stream of consciousness. The work evokes the notion of automatic typing, playing on the Surrealist technique of automatic drawing or writing, by which the artist engages in free-flowing mark making while clearing his or her conscious mind of extraneous thoughts; the method supposedly allows the maker to access his or her subconscious.

Visual Description
“Word Column IV by Leandro Katz is a sculptural installation from 1971. It is made of a typewriter, table, and typewriter ink on handmade paper. Its dimensions are variable.
Positioned in the center of a small table with iron legs and a cranberry wood top sits a black colored modified typewriter with off-white paper that extends upward toward the ceiling. Descending from the top of the sheet of paper, a long composition of words trickles down the scroll of paper in a randomized pattern of indentations and alignments. From afar, the form of the shape created by the organization of text appears to create an abstraction. The words on the paper range from Tio, Ramificacion, Trivial, Crujido, Tarantula, and Bolilla. “
