Carl Andre July 26 Movement Cuba Side 2 1965

Carl Andre is considered one of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century, and yet his concrete poetry remains relatively unknown. The critical omission with respect to his contributions to this field is especially curious given how early, voluminous, and innovative they have been. Moreover, there are rich conceptual crossovers between Andre’s Minimalist artistic practice and his experiments with the typewriter and felt-tip pen. The way in which his poems occupy the space of the white page resonates strongly with his goal to “seize and hold the space” of the white-cube gallery. Words are used as modular units to be arranged in sequential formation, equivalent to the bricks, blocks of wood, and sheets of metal that he configured against the gallery’s floors and walls. His use of these unaltered, manufactured materials echoes his use of the similarly standardized 8 ½ inch x 11 sheet of paper. The words that make up July 26 Movement Cuba Side 2 were evidently chosen and arranged on the basis of their respective lengths, such that they create the same zigzag pattern that he explored in numerous sculptures. The title alludes to the revolutionary movement that toppled Cuban president Fulgencio Batista in 1959, which derived its name from the failed 1953 attack on the Moncada military barracks in Santiago by a group of rebels led by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. The reader is left to ponder the relation between this reference and sequences of words such as “men court proofs years hair men crimes men code courts skies hell…”

Visual Description
"July 26 Movement Cuba Side 2 by Carl Andre is a text-based work from 1965. It is made of Carbon-transferred typewriting on paper. It measures roughly eleven inches by eight and a half inches and is displayed in portrait orientation, meaning its shortest side runs parallel to the floor. The words are arranged in a square formation leaving 8 evenly spaced blank areas between 9 word filled columns. The words form an optical illusion of a laced pattern at the center of the page. The zigzag pattern is presented vertically. The words of the top row read as: Words men words court proofs years hair men sell The word “men” dominates the second and eighth column managing the zigzag pattern. The words are not arranged to have a meaning, they are focused on the number of letters and how they fit into the arrangement to for the pattern. Yet there is a theme in some lines. Other words at random read as such: Throne arms voice mind soul roles think plague mouth month men wretch fate blood cell code court skies hell crime head case truth deed life home youths peace There are 26 rows in total of words centered in the middle of the page and bordered by large margins of approximately two inches. At the bottom of the page after a few lines of spacing the title of the work is revealed. The title reads as: JULY26CUBA SIDE2 The art work is finalized at the very bottom right with the hand written signature of the artist and the date 1965. "
