Tala Madani Spectre II 2016

Tala Madani’s lyrical paintings are populated by rotund and often balding men engaging in perverse or self-abasing activities. Her work is not a critique of men, but rather an interrogation of the construction of masculinity and its twinned counterpart, power. Her paintings are humorous and surprising as they defy the seriousness attached to the image of middle-aged men, and instead show them in moments of vulnerability and debased humanity. In Spectre II, Madani depicts an open-mouthed man sitting on the ground with a bottle tucked in his shorts. A warm light emanates between his legs, casting a chilling glow on his face. He is loosely rendered, with evident brushstrokes and imprecise features—the loosely painted quality of his depiction serves as a visual metaphor for his “blurry” state of drunkenness. In front of him hovers a white splotch of paint surrounded by a halo of spray paint. These abstract brushstrokes appear as a ghostly figure—perhaps an apparition dreamed up in this man’s drunken hallucination.

Visual Description
Spectre II by Tala Madani is an oil painting on linen made in 2016. It measures sixteen inches tall by fourteen inches wide. Although it is almost a square, it is hung in portrait orientation, meaning its shorter side runs parallel to the ground. The painting depicts a man sitting before a white figure that resembles a ghost or apparition. The background is painted black. In the middle right of the composition, we see a man with cropped hair siting on the floor with his legs stretched out. He is painted in a loose style that does not give him defined details and it is possible to see the brush strokes of the artist. He appears to be wearing red and white overalls and his chest is exposed. His skin is peach in highlight and purple in lowlight. His mouth is open as if laughing and his gaze is fixed on the white figure in front of him to the viewer’s left. His right hand is hidden from view and his left hand is resting on his left thigh. Inside of his trousers and sticking up towards him is a black shape similar to a wine bottle. From the bottle and his crotch, a white glow is visible. There are streaks of light on the floor projecting in front of him that are painted in light grey. In front of the man in overalls and to the viewer’s left, is a figure painted with no distinct details. It is not possible to tell if it has legs or arms. The figure is painted as a bright white and grey column and is surrounded by white spray paint. The lack of details and aura of white implies this is a ghost or some sort of vision seen only by the man in overalls.
