Diana Fonseca Quiñones Pasatiempo (Pastime) 2004

Pasatiempo can be understood as documenting more than simply a playful gesture. Diana Fonseca appropriates a childhood pastime—embroidery, needlework, “stitchery”—and sews onto her hand images that symbolize generational dreams. The artist identifies with this pastime and says that each stitch in the palm of her hand is an image of the anguish that lies within hope.

Visual Description
Pasatiempo (Hobby) by Diana Fonseca Quiñones is a video piece from 2004. The video is in color with sound and has a duration of four minutes and forty-five seconds. The video depicts the artist sewing an airplane and other symbols into the outstretched palm of their left hand. The video is closely cropped around the two hands, framing with the left and right wrists limiting the video’s point of view. The right hand holds a needle strung with black thread as it plunges in and out of the pale skin of the other hand’s open palm. Over time, the outlines of an airplane appears as the video progresses. This is happening on a brown wooden surface, probably a table top.
