Virginia Jaramillo is known for sublime abstract compositions that play off the viewer’s visual perception of space, scale, and color. Untitled (1973) pertains to Jaramillo’s celebrated “curvilinear paintings” from 1969 to 1974, which take the form of large, richly pigmented canvases that appear completely monochromatic except for delicately curving lines that seem to dance across the surface. The bright, mauve-colored line that cascades gracefully across the painting’s lower right quadrant charges the work with a jolt of energy while adding a sense of balance, tension, and sensuality.

Visual Description
Untitled by Virginia Jaramillo is a large square black canvas, spanning seventy-two inches long on all four of its sides. This equals about six feet along each of the sides of the square. The only interruption of the wide square of darkness is a single thin pink line. This line starts from the bottom edge of the canvas, at the midpoint.  The line gently curves up as it travels to the right edge of the canvas. The line accelerates from an acute angle, eventually rising to curve toward the right, like the contours of a belly or other curved body. It lifts gradually at first then slopes to near vertical as it approaches the far-right edge of the square, where it disappears off of the dark canvas a little higher than the mid-point. The only two points touched by this line are the bottom mid-point and the right-hand top part of the canvas. The line is a shade (a color that is mixed with black) of pink, not a tint (a color mixed with white), yet it is a bright shade of pink. Magenta would be the best color to describe this line.
