Visual Description
“Penetrável Macaléia is an immersive installation by Hélio Oiticica, made in 1978 and revisited in 2010. The installation consists of a large cube that measures approximately 7 x 7 x 7 feet.
The cube has a stainless-steel framework. Its faces are made of various red, blue, yellow and white diamond mesh fence panels. There are only four faces of the cube, as the bottom and top are uncovered. Each face has two fence panels, each connected to the inside or outside of the steel frame. Though one can see inside and through the cube, one’s vision is disrupted by the shapes and contrasting colors of the diamond mesh fence panels. One of the sides of the cube is ajar, like a door, at a 45-degree angle. It allows one to step inside of the cube. The open side of the cube has red fence paneling on the outside and blue on the inside. Moving clockwise, the left side of the cube has yellow fence paneling on the outside and white on the inside. Continuing to the right, across from the open side of the cube, the side has white fence paneling on the outside and yellow on the inside. Finally, the face of the cube to the right side of the entrance has red fence paneling on both the outside and the inside.
Inside and around the floor of the cube is small white gravel that is piled 2-3 inches high. Atop the gravel outside of the cube, left to the entrance, is a small garden made up of 6”-12” stones and three large tropical plants, planted inside terracotta pots.
The piece is named after and dedicated to Jards Macalé, a famous musician and friend of the artist.”
