A discussion with Primary Information’s Ryan Haley, James Hoff, and Miriam Katzeff and Ruth and Marvin Sackner. Moderated by Emily Mello Deputy Director of Education and Public Programs.
This conversation- illustrated with materials related to two specific publications and the current exhibition A Human Document: Selections from the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry –will explore sites for encounters with word and image. Considering the book as site, in addition to the archive, the exhibition, and the web, panelists will speak about how all function in their projects.
Primary Information has published several projects with materials by writers and artists who are well-represented in the Sackner Archive, including their most recent project, the republishing of An Anthology of Concrete Poetry, the first comprehensive American anthology focusing on the international movement which began in the early 50s. Edited by Emmett Williams and originally published in 1967 by Something Else Press, this seminal book has been out of print for four decades. This event will also serve as a launch for this new edition. Collectors Marvin and Ruth Sackner who often call their collection an “archive of archives” will discuss their book in progress, The Art of Typewriting which will be published by Thames & Hudson in 2015.
