Join us in person or online for the first Scholl Lecture of the year, featuring renowned American fiber artist Bisa Butler. Butler uses her work to both celebrate Black life and to tell unknown stories of the lives of African Americans.
Butler invites a reimagining of and a contemporary dialogue around age-old issues that are still problematic in our culture through the comforting and embracing medium of the quilt. She uses her work to express and emphasize what she believes—the equal value of all humans.
About Bisa Butler
Bisa Butler was born in Orange, NJ, the daughter of a college president and a French teacher. She was raised in South Orange and is the youngest of four siblings. Formally trained, Butler graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor’s in Fine Art degree. She began to experiment with fabric as a medium and became interested in collage techniques.
