Featuring Gary Simmons’s Most In-Depth Presentation to Date, PAMM Presents with George Clinton, and Artist-Curator Conversations

(MIAMI — November 27, 2023) — Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is pleased to announce an exciting lineup of events, exhibitions, and programs for Miami Art Week 2023. Featuring panel discussions, artist-led tours, and lively parties, the museum’s dynamic Art Week programs highlight the museum’s dedication to Miami’s diverse arts community and encourage art-viewing as a means of genuine human connection.
“We take pride in PAMM as a hub for shared conversation and diverse programming, and we are excited to invite an international audience to experience the cultural fabric of this city through our robust Miami Art Week programming,” said PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans. “We believe something special can come from putting people who love art together in the same place, and we look forward to serving as a pillar reflective of these conversations in 2023.”
Debuting during Art Week, Gary Simmons: Public Enemy is the first comprehensive career survey of the multidisciplinary artist’s work. The exhibition encompasses thirty years of Simmons’ career with approximately seventy works including sculptures, paintings, works on paper, installations, and large-scale wall drawings that the artist will create on-site. Since the late 1980s, Simmons has played a key role in situating questions of race, class, and identity as reflected in multiple aspects of American culture such as cinema, music, literature, sports and urbanism.
The museum will be open with special hours throughout the week for visitors to attend special programs and view the museum’s current exhibitions, which include: Joan Didion: What She Means, an exhibition curated by acclaimed writer Hilton Als featuring nearly fifty artists including Betye Saar, Vija Celmins, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres; Yayoi Kusama: Love is Calling, the largest and the most immersive installation of the artist’s Infinity Mirror Rooms featuring a poetry soundtrack exploring enduring themes including life and death; Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich: Too Bright to See (Part I), an experimental film installation focusing on the artist’s extensive research of the overlooked female writer and activist Suzanne Roussi-Césaire; Marcela Cantuária: The South American Dream, the artist’s first solo exhibition featuring all newly commissioned painting works; and Jason Seife: Coming to Fruition, featuring all new site-specific works including a custom wallpaper, triptychs, and a large-scale canvas.
PAMMTV will also debut a new exhibition curated by foundational media art curator Barbara London. Perpetual Motion is London’s first streaming-on-demand exhibition and features ten moving-image artists exploring the transforming discipline of video art. For the exhibition, London brings together a global selection of video works confronting how technological change, mass media, and the universality of moving images affect the activity of contemporary artists from South Florida to Hong Kong, Peru, South Korea, and beyond. Participating artists include Kamari Carter, Richard Garet, Bang Geul Han, Cornelia Parker, Wong Ping, Zina Saro-Wiwa, Aki Sasamoto, Joey Skaggs, Federico Solmi, and Claudix Vanesix.
Miami Art Week 2023 programming highlights include: a special preview for Gary Simmons: Public Enemy on Tuesday, December 5 from 9am–2pm, followed by a Scholl Lecture Series, with the artist in conversation with curators Jadine Collingwood, René Morales, and Franklin Sirmans; PAMM Presents, the museum’s signature Art Week celebration, which will take place on Thursday, December 7 from 8–11pm, featuring headliner George Clinton; and a screening of ¡Fenomenal!
