Creation is a mixed media painting made by Leroy Almon in 1994. The painting measures approximately 1 by 2 feet and is hung in a landscape orientation, meaning its largest side runs parallel to the ground. The artwork is made with acrylic paint on top of carved wood, giving the painting a textured and dynamic surface. Leroy Almon is a self-trained painter, and his marks are direct and instinctive. This artwork is an example of bas-relief within the subject of folk art. Bas-relief is when one carves into a 2D plane to create grooves to accentuate figures and objects, in this case, wood. Folk art is a genre of painting that depicts traditional life- shared cultural aesthetics and social issues. The painting is part of a series that depicts biblical narratives. This painting is divided into four horizontal sections. In the bottom section, there is a thin dark phthalo-blue strip with short, white flowing lines representing the movement of water. In the bottom right corner, there is a small unpainted rectangle of wood with the letters “L.A.” carved into it. This is the artist’s signature.Above the water in the second quadrant, is a dark forest-green strip with a brown nude male figure. His head is on the left side of the composition. He is lying in a supine position, in profile, with his head facing up towards the sky. He has red lips and short black hair. He is surrounded by a lighter coral-brown shape that appears to be dirt, implying that the figure is either buried underground or laying atop a patch of earth. In the third section, there is a bright emerald green hill with three large trees scattered across the landscape. The trees are 2/3 the size of the male figure. There is a tree on either side of the figure and one on top of him, above his chest. The tree trunks are tan, and their leaves are each made up of one lime green flame-like shape. In the top section is a light phthalo-blue sky with three small organic white shapes representing clouds. On the top right, there is a large brown hand reaching down from the sky to the lying figure, in between the middle and right-most trees. The hand has on a scrappy tan shirt that is the same color as the trunk of the trees. Its index finger has a bright red nail that connects to and merges with the figure’s back left knee.
