Visual Description
Chopped Cheese by Tschabalala Self is a mixed media two-dimensional piece made in 2017. It is made of acrylic, watercolor, flash, crayon, colored pencil, oil pastel, pencil, hand-colored photocopy, hand-colored canvas on canvas, and measures eight feet tall by seven feet wide. It is hung in portrait orientation, meaning its shorter side is parallel to the floor. Chopped Cheese depicts a brown female figure in what appears to be a grocery store or bodega. Starting with the background, a large portion of the composition is taken up by a section of green canvas. On the top left corner of the green canvas a piece of unpainted canvas is layered and stitched on top. Within this canvas are drawn containers for food on shelves. In the upper right corner of the green canvas there is a cluster of potato chip bags that are unpainted. Beneath the bags, there are three thin white lines that angle downward from the top corner of the composition toward the middle of the canvas. At the bottom of three thin white lines there is another piece of canvas stitched to the green background canvas. This piece is colored light blue and depicts a glass refrigerator, a black tube containing tube shaped products, and a black and white checkered floor. Inside the refrigerator we can see egg cartons, rectangles with the word “CHEESE” written on them, pieces of meat, wrapped meat with a boar’s head logo, packaged foods, and star shapes that resemble light reflections. The back of the fridge is pink and its sides are black. Sitting on top of the fridge are a couple of bags of plantain chips and a breakfast sandwich. The checkerboard floor extends toward the entire bottom half of the composition and is where the central figure is standing. She stands between the shelves of the background and the refrigerator which is on her right. Behind her we can see unpainted canvas which serves as a silhouette for the figure. She is looking at the viewer. Her eyes are black, her hair is also black and reaches her shoulders. She has red lips and her face is various shades of brown and tan. In her right arm she is holding a sandwich to her face as if she were about to eat it. Her right arm is also various shades of brown. The fingers on her right hand, of which three are visible, have red painted nails. She is wearing a blue shirt, a yellow and blue belt, blue jeans, and sneakers which are blue, white, black, and pink. Her left arm is behind her and not visible. Her left hand is visible and pokes out from behind her lower back, palm side up, posed as if she were walking casually. Her left hand’s fingernails are painted white. Her left leg is bent at the knee, also implying she is walking.
