Zhao Gang Cocksucker Blues 2014–15

This giant painting is titled after the unreleased Robert Frank documentary film of the same name that chronicled the Rolling Stones’ 1972 American tour. Painted after Gang visited the villages of 21 intellectuals victimized by Mao’s Cultural Revolution, this massive group portrait pictures its tragic subjects against a bright blue sky culled from a photo of the Yangtze River Delta. Like Gang, many of these figures were educated in Europe and America and returned to China at the top of their game. Unlike Gang, they were harassed, humiliated, imprisoned, tortured, and killed. But for a twist of historical fate, he could have easily been one of them.

Visual Description
Cocksucker Blues by artist Zhao Gang is a large-scale oil painting on canvas. It measures thirteen feet tall by nineteen and a half feet wide and is hung in landscape orientation, meaning its longest side runs parallel to the ground. The painting depicts a group of twenty-one people. Sixteen individuals are painted with faces and an additional five without any details, just an outline of their silhouette. The figures with faces all appear to be men, and many of them older men. We are only shown their busts, meaning from their shoulders up. They are painted in a mixture of browns, blacks, and white as if made of clay. The figures all face the viewer and are of East Asian origin. Several figures have Chinese characters painted on their heads. Among the crowd of figures which take up more than two-thirds of the composition are figures without faces. They are shown only in outline. Two of the outlines are painted white while the other three are painted black. One figure in the center of the composition serves as a bridge between these two approaches and is painted with detail in his face while his body is left solid white. Behind the entire group of figures, we can see a blue sky with a line of clouds towards the upper border of the composition.  The clouds stretch across the entire width of the large, wide canvas.
