Visual Description
Among Heirs (Niamuck and Azurest) is a layered painting made by Tomashi Jackson  in 2021. The work measures approximately 6 x 6 feet and 9 inches deep. The painting is made with Acrylic and Shinnecock wampum dust on canvas, cotton textiles, and paper bags with archival prints on PVC marine vinyl. The bottom layer of the painting is an unstretched canvas, mounted on a handcrafted walnut wooden awning structure using brass hooks and grommets. The figurative images are painted using the style of an enlarged newspaper print, meaning the images are made up entirely of 45-degree angle lines with varying thickness. The lines reach from left up towards the right. The layering of these angled lines within the painting creates dynamic movement while making it difficult to visually distinguish the images from one another. The furthest back image, or bottom layer, is centered and painted bright red. It depicts an archival family photo with a young Black girl wearing a white shirt on the right side of the photo. It seems that there are additional figures to her left, though it is difficult to make out the details of the rest of the image as it has more images layered over it. The bottom of the image has blue paint layered over the red, creating a dark navy section.  There is another archival family photograph painted atop and around the red image, using white paint. The white paint reaches the top, bottom and side edges of the substrate. A young girl is painted on the left side of the composition and a young Black woman with short hair is on the right side- both are facing the viewer, posing with wide and bright smiles. There is a round yellow shape loosely painted on top of the white and red images, taking up ¾ of the left side of the composition. The yellow shape creates an orange where it overlaps the central red image. There is also a thick yellow vertical line painted on the bottom corner of the substrate. The bottom right corner of the substrate is painted cerulean blue around the frame of the image.  There is an archival photographic image printed, not painted, with phthalo green across two strips of transparent PVC marine vinyl. These strips are hanging from the top center and left-of-center of the composition, attached with grommets. The phthalo green of the image shifts in color, depending on what is layered beneath it. The print depicts three Black figures with medium builds- two females with swim caps on the left and one male on the right. All three are gazing at the viewer and smiling. The central figure has a teeth-baring smile while the other two smirk without separating their lips to reveal their teeth. All three of them are wearing dark tank tops and shorts.
