Visual Description
With a Heart of Gold by Willie Cole is a round wall-based sculpture made with shoes, wood, screws, metal, and staples. The sculpture is round with a seven-foot diameter and stands about one and a half feet off the wall. The piece resembles a stylized flower or sunburst, constructed from numerous overlapping, worn high-heeled shoes. Most of the shoes are white, cream, and beige, varying slightly in shade and with hints of other colors like light browns, tans, and hints of dark colors. The central part of the piece stands out with a more pronounced assembly of shoes with yellow heels pointed towards the audience, appearing to be a dark-yellowish orange/gold core. This core is surrounded by the lighter-colored pieces that radiate outwards, creating a layered and textured effect.
