Inspired by the flora and fauna of the Dominican Republic, Hulda Guzmán depicts dreamlike scenarios unfolding amid lush, green Caribbean landscapes. In Under the Flamboyán, a leisurely couple rests on the ground near a fountain beneath the shade of a majestic flamboyán (royal poinciana) tree in full bloom. Nearby, a man tends to a pair of horses, a pair of cats, and a dog. The true protagonist of the scene, however, is nature. As in traditional Chinese landscape paintings, the humans in Guzmán’s composition are small in scale relative to the verdant environment that envelops them. Offering an idealized counterpoint to the reality of the effects of rapid urbanization, pollution, and climate change on ecosystems throughout the Caribbean region, Guzmán presents a world in which the hierarchies between human beings and non-human beings are leveled, allowing them to live together in harmony.

Visual Description
Under the Flamboyán by artist Hulda Guzmán is an acrylic painting on canvas made in 2020. It measures roughly forty-eight inches tall by twenty-nine inches wide, or around four feet by two and a half feet. It is hung in portrait orientation, meaning its shortest side runs parallel to the floor. This painting is an example of a narrative landscape, which means that it tells a story within a depiction of natural scenery or place. Under the Flamboyán is named after the large Poinciana tree in its foreground, called a flamboyán in the artist’s native Dominican Republic. Comprised of two diagonal sections, a snaking row of short round cylindrical concrete blocks divides the painting. The concrete pavers start in the middle of the left side of the canvas and run to the bottom right corner of the painting. The portions of the painting above and to the right of the dividing concrete features a lush green tropical forest. Beneath and to the lower left of the snaking concrete division is a pebbled courtyard in which a man and woman lay on the ground. Beneath the pair is a dog and two horses, one of which has a monkey straddled on its back. In front of this horse are two cats, one of which is being engaged with by the crouching man. The top left corner of the canvas is painted a bright and solid cadmium orange color, which contrasts sharply against a large canopy of green tropical trees, which takes up the most space in the painting. The right side of the painting is mostly comprised of medium-sized intersecting palm trees, their leaves appearing yellowish green in color, arching upward and outward. About one quarter the width of the painting from the right side, and halfway to the top of the canvas, a large, dead, brown palm tree shoots upward towards a turquoise blue sky, squeezed tightly towards the top edge of the painting. The lower section of the painting features a mix of humans and animals. A row of nine stones leads a trail toward an empty grey pot. A man wearing a turquoise shirt and mustard yellow pants lays in front of the pot. He has olive and red clay colored skin. Next to him, a woman lays on an olive-colored pillow. She wears a purple long sleeve shirt covered under a pink vest. She also wears purple pants. Her skin is also the color of red clay. Around them, orange leaves that have fallen from the flamboyán tree litter the ground of the top section of the courtyard. To the left of her is a black and grey round object, with brown tree branches on the ground to the left of it. Following the trail, five steps beneath the couple, in the direction of the bottom edge of the painting, is a medium sized white dog, with a grey middle section of fur and a brown spot on his back. Beneath the dog are two brown horses. One of the horses is carrying a small red-faced monkey on its back. The monkey’s forearms are covered with blond fur. The belly of the horse is a sandy brown color compared to the darker reddish brown of its coat. The lower sections of the horse’s front legs are black, its rear legs are black, while their hooves are creamy white. Its tail is black. The horse’s head is lowered close to the ground, as if it is sniffing something. The stone/step in front of the horse features two orange cats. One in the rear sits up, with white fur around her neck, knees, and paws. The cat’s tail is brown. The cat in the front has white spots on its nose and neck, belly and rear paws. The cat in the foreground is laying on its stomach, with its rear legs pointing to left, with a brown tipped tail covering its rear leg. The lower left of the courtyard is covered with a mix of grey pebbles that vary from black, to light, to medium in tone.
