Visual Description
Sediment by Jeff Sonhouse is a nine foot by seven-foot mixed media painting with collage on canvas. It hangs in portrait orientation, meaning its shortest side runs parallel to the floor. Light appears in blue, orange, green, and pink filling the background with realistic silhouettes of foliage. There are plants painted in bright green in the foreground gently hugging a figure in the center. Hidden in the brush an owl, snake and small bird reveal themselves. The colors fill the forest with neon light and a tree trunk frames the composition to the left. The human figure shows his disproportionately large blue hands, holding one open palm to his chest and the other in a mudra that brings two fingers to the thumb. He is draped in an acentric assortment of textured garments such as a pin striped suit with a tie, leopard cloak and silk blue cloth beginning at the shoulder hanging below the navel. A collage style nose and mouth can be seen with two sunken red lit eyes with a plastic film over top of them both. The rest of the face is suggested through a red and black zig zag pattern that blocks out the shape of the head. Black and orange ruffles fan out from the figures dome as an adornment or crown.
