Visual Description
Os infantes – irreverência by Antonio Obá is a painting created in 2020 using oil on canvas. The artwork measures approximately three and a half tall by four and a quarter feet wide and is displayed in a portrait orientation, with its shorter side aligned parallel to the floor. In the painting, two figures lean over a white snake. The figure on the left is dressed in a flowing, pale blue garment that contrasts sharply with the surrounding darkness. The figure on the right wears a muted peach-colored top paired with dark pants. Both figures have dark skin and closely cropped hair. They have bent postures and a focused gaze as they are actively grabbing the white snake beneath them. One grabs the snake by the head while the other grabs it by its tail. Behind them, a dense thicket of trees stretches across the background. The tangled branches are covered in deep green foliage and scattered with vibrant red blossoms. These blooming trees form a kind of natural curtain, adding texture and movement to the composition. Above them, the sky shifts into shades of violet and dusk-blue, casting a twilight glow over the scene and enhancing the mysterious, dreamlike quality of the setting. The ground is rendered in dark tones and appears thick with vegetation or soil, grounding the scene in a rich and earthy environment. The overall color palette is both moody and atmospheric, with dramatic contrasts between light and shadow. The soft pastel hues of the clothing stand out against the darkness of the environment, drawing attention to the figures and their interaction with the white snake at the center.
