Visual Description
The Rhythm of Street Life is a mixed-media collage by Evita Tezeno, created in 2023. The work measures four feet tall by six feet wide and one and a half inches deep. It is made using hand-painted patterned papers, acrylic paint, vintage buttons inherited from the artist’s grandmother, and other mixed media. Six Black figures stand side by side across the composition in a gathered group, set against a bright blue sky punctuated with white clouds and crimson-colored architectural forms. Each figure is constructed from richly patterned collaged papers that create varied textures across clothing, hair, and skin tones with florals, grids, swirls, and geometric designs layered throughout. From left to right: The first figure is a woman wearing a magenta dress with dark floral patterns and bright neon green shoes. The second figure, in a light-colored checkered shirt with a yellow tie decorated with a purple pattern, wraps their left arm around the waist of the third figure—a woman in a turquoise blue dress patterned with lime-colored rose patterns. She wears a bright red chunky beaded necklace and matching earrings. Behind this embracing pair, slightly receded in space, stands a fourth figure in a purple dress with geometric patterns holding a yellow and orange floral patterned purse. The fifth figure wears a yellow hat, an orange gridded top, and a tie with red and white floral patterns. The sixth figure turns in profile on the far right, wearing a yellow dress with a purple starburst pattern and purple high-heeled shoes. A purple purse with swirling designs hangs from her shoulder. The collaged papers create a rich surface alive with pattern and texture, with each figure’s outfit offering its own distinct combination of prints and colors.
