Rosana Paulino’s Musa paradisíaca is a mixed-media textile work created in 2018. Made from digital prints on cloth that have been cut, painted, and sewn together, the artwork measures 36 x 51 inches. It is presented in a portrait orientation, with its shorter edge running parallel to the floor. The composition is arranged in a patchwork grid of fabric panels, forming a rectangular shape that appears carefully assembled but slightly irregular. The panels do not align perfectly, giving the work a dynamic, layered feel. Loose threads and visible seams emphasize the handmade quality of the piece, drawing attention to the labor and care involved in its creation. Each fabric panel contains distinct imagery or marks. Several panels feature black-and-white prints of hands—some skeletal, some more lifelike—pressed flat against pale backgrounds. These images evoke x-rays or imprints, suggesting both presence and absence. One panel stands out with a vibrant depiction of an orange and yellow flower, its curved green stem extending upward. This lush botanical detail provides the only burst of color in the otherwise muted palette and draws the eye to the center of the composition. Other panels include patterned blue-and-white motifs, handwritten red text, and ghostly figures that appear blurred or partially obscured. The text, written in an expressive and uneven script, feels urgent and personal, as if conveying memory or testimony. Together, these visual elements create a rhythm across the surface, encouraging viewers to look closely at each panel and its unique contribution to the whole. Set against a neutral wall, the artwork’s textures and tonal contrasts are highlighted. The palette is largely made up of blacks, whites, and grays, punctuated by flashes of red and the single vivid flower. The repetition of hands, fragments of text, and the layering of images give the piece a sense of fragmented storytelling. Through her use of textiles and printing, Paulino combines traditional craft with contemporary image-making.
