Visual Description
Black Monalisa is an acrylic painting on canvas which was made in 2022 by Brazilian artist Zeh Palito. The painting is rectangular in shape, measuring five feet by four feet. It is hung in portrait orientation meaning that its shorter side runs parallel to the ground. The painting is very brightly colored. It depicts a black woman in the foreground sitting on a comfortable armchair, in what appears to be an ornate living room. The floor is checkered with large black and white squares, and beneath the woman’s seat is what seems to be a bright pink fuzzy carpet. The wall in the background is bright pink as well, and there is a painting hanging on the wall which is a portrait of another woman. The portrait in the background is a visual reference to the Rennaissance artwork “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci. There is essentially a painting within a painting. The seated woman in the foreground, who is the most prominent figure, has her legs crossed. Her right hand rests on her lap, while her left is on the armrest of the chair. Gold and silver rings are visible on both of her hands, as well as a golden chain with a round pendant around her neck. Her face is darkly painted black by the artist, her eyes and teeth are the only discernable features. Her hair is stark white in contrast, and extends outwards to the side, giving her head a triangular silhouette. The portrait in the background on the wall directly behind the seated woman, depicts a similarly featured black woman adopting a pose like that of the famous Renaissance artwork by Da Vinci. The overall color scheme of the painting is very lively and immediately noticable. The woman’s pants and shirt are different shades of light pink. The chair she is sitting on is bright yellow and golden.
