Sandú Darié Sin título (Untitled) n.d.

Sandú Darié was part of the group Los Diez Pintores Concretos, which played a leading role in the introduction of full abstraction to Cuba. In Untitled, the artist eliminates all naturalist representation; the geometric shapes become the main characters of the piece. Flat primary colors, arranged in harmony and balance, form an attractive image. The goal is to create a purely rational composition, with absolute clarity and technique.

Visual Description
Sin título (Untitled) by Sandú Darié Laver is a painting. It measures fifteen by twenty and a half inches and is hung in landscape orientation, meaning its longest side runs parallel to the ground. It is made of tempera on board. This painting is an example of an abstraction, which is a style of painting that focuses on the gestural movement of shapes and colors rather than depicting scenes or figures. The painting is comprised of rectangular and circular shapes painted yellow, white, black, or red. Starting from the top left of the composition, there is a yellow rectangle with a black outer trim and a black square inside of it. To its right there is a red semi-circle toward the top edge and a black semi-circle underneath it. In between them the space is painted white. Continuing to the top right edge is a yellow square with a red trim at its base, a black triangle on the bottom left corner, and a red semi-circle on its bottom right edge. The following section, beginning at the middle left begins with a white “L” shape that is touching a red rectangle. The center of the composition is marked by a circle that is made primarily of black and white paint in irregular shapes with a red square inside and red on its bottom edge. To its right is a white rectangle with a smaller red rectangle underneath. The final section, starting at the bottom left with a red semi-circle with a black bottom edge and black square inside of it. Touching it is an irregular rectangular shape painted yellow. This is followed by a section of white paint and a red rectangle that is touching a black square and another irregular shape painted yellow. The bottom right edge is mostly white with two thin black rectangles.
