Taryn Simon Convention on Cluster Munitions. Oslo, Norway, December 3, 2008, Paperwork and the Will of Capital 2015

Convention on Cluster Munitions. Oslo, Norway, December 3, 2008 belongs to a series in which Taryn Simon precisely reconstructs flower arrangements and plants that adorned the tables where international negotiations have taken place. Simon studied photographs that document the public events accompanying the finalization of deals that range from financial agreements to treaties governing nuclear disarmament, war, and arms trafficking. This work recreates the bouquet that was present at an international agreement banning the use and creation of cluster bombs—a type of especially damaging bomb that releases projectiles on impact.   By remaking and photographing the floral centerpiece that was both a witness to and acted as décor for this historic moment, Simon’s project is a testament to artifice and stagecraft that goes into constructing diplomatic and national activities. The work is framed in a heavy, dark wood that references the aesthetics of boardroom furniture, and includes a full description outlining the agreement that the floral arrangement accompanied. In this work, Simon bridges conceptual and documentary photography by using an object to reflect the complexity and diversity of sociopolitical events in our increasingly globalized world.

Visual Description
Convention on Cluster Munitions. Oslo, Norway, December 3, 2008, Paperwork and the Will of Capital by Taryn Simon is an archival inkjet print and text on archival herbarium paper in wood frame. It measures roughly seven feet tall by six feet wide.  The piece is a photograph that depicts an arrangement of flowers against a backdrop of two colors. The background of the image is made of two solid colors. The topmost color is a light blue similar to the color of the sky. It extends about two thirds of the entire composition. It is met at the bottom third by a solid red-brown color. Resting on the brown is an arrangement of flowers.  The flowers are placed one on top of the other. At the base is a clump of purple flowers. Coming out from the base of purple flowers is a group of eleven yellow flowers with green stems and leaves.  The photograph is housed inside a brown wooden frame that is thicker on the viewer’s right-hand side. On this thicker side there is a piece of paper with text visible through a small window that has been cut out about halfway down the vertical edge of the frame.
