Visual Description
Brasil nativo—Brasil alienígena (Native Brazil—Alien Brazil) is a 1977 artwork by Brazilian artist Anna Bella Geiger consisting of a group of framed postcards and photographs. The framed artwork measures just under five feet tall and two feet wide by one and three quarters inches deep. This work consists of a grid of 18 images arranged in nine pairs across multiple rows within a clean white mat and simple frame. The artwork pairs commercial postcards featuring indigenous people with photographs of Geiger herself and her family members, taken on the balcony of her home, deliberately mirroring the poses found in the postcards. The postcards represent idealized scenes of daily life among the Bororo people of Mato Grosso, while the corresponding photographs show the artist and her family recreating similar compositions in their contemporary urban setting. The collection includes a mix of black and white and color images that capture various aspects of cultural life, including groups of people in traditional dress, ceremonial contexts, traditional dwellings and structures, and scenes of daily life. The ethnographic postcards feature both adults and children engaged in cultural activities, while the paired family photographs show similar groupings and poses but in a modern domestic context. Created during the 1970s when indigenous peoples in Brazil were experiencing violence from military government policies, the work establishes a visual dialogue between romanticized commercial representations of indigenous life and contemporary Brazilian family photography.
