Visual Description
Ogun’s Return (Once Again…Statues Never Die) is an inkjet print made by Isaac Julien in 2022. Overall, it measures about four feet tall by six and a half feet wide. It is in horizontal orientation, meaning that its longest side runs parallel to the ground. The image depicts a film scene from Julien’s immersive film installation Once Again…(Statues Never Die), created for the Barnes Museum’s centennial celebration in Philadelphia. Dr. Barnes was known for collecting and championing African art and displaying it alongside modern art by Picasso, Modigliani, etc. At the Barnes Collection in Philadelphia, everything remains on the walls exactly as Barnes placed them a century ago. The viewer must see the objects through his personal lens. This photograph shows the actor André Holland portraying Alain Locke, known as the “father of the Harlem Renaissance,” reflected in glass display cases containing African art objects. He is in a formal gray suit and black tie while standing in the museum setting. His eyebrows are a little furrowed, giving him a contemplative expression while looking upward. The photograph creates a layered composition where the person is visible—like a ghost image—alongside various African art objects, including wooden sculptures and traditional artifacts displayed on pedestals. There are multiple reflection effects in the glass of the display case, creating an interesting visual interplay between the viewer (the person in the suit) and the cultural artifacts being viewed.
