Luis Camnitzer Insults 2009

Luis Camnitzer is widely celebrated as one of the pioneers of conceptualism and institutional critique. Though he employs a wide range of techniques, including printmaking, photography, sculpture, and installation, his true medium is language. Camnitzer uses words and statements in experimental ways to critique repressive power structures, from specific governmental, institutional, and corporate entities to more general frameworks of social control, including pedagogical practices, the collective norms and values that dictate the construction of personal identity, and the imbalance of wealth and influence among developed and developing nations. Consisting of the sentence “All those who can’t read [___] are stupid” in six different languages, rendered in vinyl directly on the wall, Camnitzer’s Insults is a simultaneously playful and aggressive statement about the fallacies of nationalism and ethnic/linguistic tribalism.

Visual Description
“Insults by Luis Camnitzer consists of large vinyl lettering directly applied to the wall. The dimensions of the work vary every time it is installed, covering the entirety of the wall of its location. It is shown in landscape orientation, meaning that its longest side tends to run parallel to the ground. The lettering in Insults consists of the sentence “All those who can’t read [___] are stupid” in six different languages, with the name of the language it is written in filling the space of the blank. The black text covers the entirety of the wall from top to bottom and side to side. With the fonts alternating in style cycling between bold and serif, spaced evenly as if they were taken out of the page of a textbook. “
