In the 1980s Rothenberg took to oil paint, a medium which accentuated her vigorous brushwork. In Pin Wheel, colors whirl around a central axis, hurling fields of red, pink, and yellow in diverging directions. A faint suggestion of a twisting figure coils across the composition, and seems at once to dissolve into and forge itself from the pigments. “I was getting more and more involved with color,” Rothenberg stated, “and letting the colored space take the figure where it wanted.”
